- STEP 021 > When your cut is done it should look something like this. As you can see, the cut piece is still attached to your sheet on both sides, keeping the important Red Cutting Guides in position for your top and bottom cuts later on.
- STEP 022 > Time for the opposite side of your first cut. Again, align the ruler with your Red Cutting Guides, and start and stop at the green lines you see in the photo.
- STEP 023 > After both sides are cut we can move to the top and bottom where now you CAN and SAFE to cut all the way accross. Just place your ruler along the Red Cutting Guides and slice.
- STEP 024 > Repeat the same for the last side.
- STEP 025 > The outside of your octagonal frame shape is now cut and look like this. We now have to remove the dorito decal that you see in the center of your Small Blast Door frame.
- STEP 026 > As for the outside first cut, you want to align your ruler with your Red Cutting Guides and you will cut between the Green Lines. DO NOT SLICE INTO THE DOOR FRAME COLOUR !!!
- STEP 027 > This is one of your dorito door corners. Now REPEAT the same steps on your 2nd decal sheet.
- STEP 028 > Remember that other half you sliced off at the very start? You will grab it and again use the red cutting guides to align your ruler against one of the long sides and slice between the Green Lines. You again want to keep those guides in place for the last 2 cuts.
- STEP 029 > Flip your decal sheet 180 degrees and repeat the previous operation.
- STEP 030 > If you are uneasy of trusting your Red Guide Lines for these next cuts, you can always use the pale grey line that you see go accross the decals here between the 2 red arrows.
- STEP 031 > Align your ruler and slice right across your sheet which will give you 2 more dorito shapes. Now REPEAT these cuts on your 2nd sheet decals.
- STEP 032 > There is one last step in order to complete your dorito door corners, which is to remove these tiny white marks in 2 of the corners.
- STEP 033 > You can use your X-Acto knife, but I find it faster with the scissors for these cuts. Simply align your blades where the white starts and cut.
- STEP 034 > With the 2 ends snipped off, your dorito door corner decal is now done and ready for application.
- STEP 035 > Snip off the corners on the remaining squares and put aside for now.
- STEP 036 > It's almost time to apply your octagonal door frame to one of the foamcore squares but first, if you want your diorama to look best, you need to first blacken the edges with your Sharpie pen.
- STEP 037 > Now this step is not 100% needed, but it does make a huge difference in the blending and final look of your Small Blast Door, or any Death Star contruction to be honest.
- STEP 038 > When drawing the black edges, you want your decal to be pointed OUTSIDE or in the direction the pen tip is pointing to. This way, if you fall off the edge, and smear your decal, it will be on the backside as you see on the left as opposed to on the decal itself which would not be good.
- STEP 039 > You DON'T want to draw with the TIP down on the edge, like we do in coloring books. You want to use the SIDES of the pen tip as this gives you a wider surface to glide better across the side edges of your decals.
-
STEP 040 > Here you can see on the left of my finger where the black Sharpie pen coloured the edge. See how it blends a lot better with the foamcore once the decal is applied compared to leaving it as is ? The white line is created by the thickness of the paper which shows up more on black foamcore.
Again, this is not a must as I know it is time consuming, but if you want to make the best small blast door ever 🙂 you can clearly see here the difference it makes.
