- STEP 021 > Now its time to make Jabba's Sailbarge. Well the front quarter anyways 🙂 I scanned a picture and printed it to scale for the figures taping all the papers together. Because of it's size, wanting to keep it in scale, I can only fit the front half inside the diorama box.
- STEP 022 > Using foamcore as a skeleton I wrapped a 1/16 thick cardboard like a skin. This gives a nice smooth base for the barge
- STEP 023 > Using archive pictures for reference, I cut out patterns in regular carboard. I glued them on to the "skin" base with a hot glue gun. With even only the first level of detail, it's starting to come alive. I LOVE IT !
- STEP 024 > Well I used more foamcore for the railings, understructure and sail posts. The half sail is a plain posterboard sheet cut in the proper shape and suspended by a center rod.
- STEP 025 > Ok, This is what the scale of the Sail Barge looks like within the diorama box. Let's go paint it now.
- STEP 026 > After a few hours now were getting somewhere - Niub Niub is sooo excited 🙂 This is just a first coat of latex paint, now the detailing and weathering must be done.
- STEP 027 > This will give you an idea of where I am headed in terms of layout. It's fun to compare this with my Step 001 sketch 🙂
- STEP 028 > I made a snake base shape in regular Sculpey because it is cheaper and baked it 45 minutes in the oven to harden the shell. I could then apply Super Sculpey thin sheet of skin and detail the beak's inner pallet by closely examining my reference pictures from the official star wars site and paused laserdisc.
- STEP 029 > Next was the sculpting of the tongue which was a lot easier the the pallet - Almost looks like a cookie.
- STEP 030 > Today I added scaley details to the top lip and some skin texture on the top part of Sarlaac. Using the reference images helps a lot to try to get it movie accurate.
- STEP 031 > Today I finished the detailed skin texture on the rest of the body. This step was so time consuming... a whopping 3 days - but I think worth the while judging the result .
- STEP 032 > Final Step is painting and weathering. If my airbrush compressor was not broken the result would have been 500% better but using a brush and latex paint didn't turn out tooo bad.
- STEP 033 > Now after all that time on the detailing of the body, I thought the tentacles would be a piece of cake. Ha was I wrong ! As soon as I would finish and cure it (to make it hard) it would break in two or three or four pieces in my hand - ARGHHHH !!!!. I had to remake 7 tentacles. I'm beginning to think that just looking at them will make them break - Curse you Sarlacc.
- STEP 034 > Finally after 6 weekends my Sarlaac Pit is complete - YEAH !!!! This has been the diorama that has taken me the longest time to make and the most detailed for accuracy. I'm glad my friend Frank gave me the idea to create Jabba's Sail Barge to place in the background. I think it helped make a cool diorama into an AWESOME one. Let me know what you guys and girls think. Was it 6 weeks well spent ? 🙂
