- STEP 081 > For the large paper plate portion of the shield, make sure to dab your brush on a paper towel or napkin BEFORE painting, as you want a dry brush effect here, where the paint ony gets applied to the raised surfaces, giving you a 2 tone look.
- STEP 082 > When both sides are done, you can move to the top center strip. Again, make sure to only brush bottom to top, not sideways, you want to give a metal look to the foamcore.
- STEP 083 > Here is an example of when you put TOO MUCH WET PAINT on your large paper plate texture. It gets all muddy and yucky - CACA. LOL. You want to see the white gaps in between like the one behind.
- STEP 084 > Now time to make this generator look all dirty and used, which is the Star Wars signature 🙂 I always liked that where Star Trek was all nice, new and clean, Star Wars was all gritty and realistic.
- STEP 085 > Now the OLI effect we DO NOT WANT on ALL the surface, only the edges and corners where oil would build up.
- STEP 086 > Place some black watered down latex paint on your brush, dab it on a paper towel, napkin and gently SWOOSH it in a circular motion from the edges on up.
- STEP 087 > Another cool trick is to switch from paintbrush to sponges. This absorbs the paint and when squeezed will drip down the sides.
- STEP 088 > Gently squeeze your sponge to let the paint drip down into cool paterns. They will never be 2 identical as this is very organic.
- STEP 089 > Just continue dirtying it up until you are satisfied with the result.
- STEP 090 > Don't forget to weather, dirty the top of your strips too 🙂
- STEP 091 > This pretty much looks good to me 🙂 time to paint the other 3 sections.
- STEP 092 > Painting is all done - YEAH !!!! We can place our shield generator on a styrofoam diorama base or white shelf if you prefer. We need to cover it with snow 🙂
- STEP 093 > For the convention, I discovered this product called INSTANT SNOW. It looks like salt, but when wet, grows 5x it's size into snow flaky like appearance. This was super fun for the kids.
- STEP 094 > Grab your spoon and apply generous amounts of snow along the floor of your diorama display. This is Hoth is it not ? 🙂
- STEP 095 > Don't forget to put snow on the TOP of your shield generator as well.
- STEP 096 > We are now DONE 🙂 You have a Hoth Rebel Shield generator. If you have the space, you can make another or 3 or 4 or 5 ... LOL
- STEP 097 > Going back to INSTANT SNOW, though fun for the convention, the downside I discovered getting home, is with time, 1 week or so, the snow returns to it's salty appearance when dried. NOT GOOD. For my HOME version I used LAUNDRY POWDER DETERGENT, it looks the same, looks great, smells nice LOL and doesn't affect the color of your figures. You could use BAKING POWDER like ILM did if you prefer. LOVE IT - Have fun building. FRANK.
