- STEP 001 > Here is a view of all the materials you will need to build your Death Star Hallway Basic Door.
- STEP 002 > Looking at the blueprints - available for free in the tutorials section, find the link using the Speed Index menu) let's start with these foamcore pieces
- STEP 003 > Start by measuring 5 cm at both ends of your foamcore sheet.
- STEP 004 > With your ruler, connect your 2 markings and draw a line with your pencil.
- STEP 005 > If your foamcore strip isn't wide enough for all the cuts, just measure another 5 cm above the line you just drew with your pencil like I had to do here.
- STEP 006 > Again line up your marks and draw a line straight across with your pencil.
- STEP 007 > We need 2 equal 15 cm tall pieces for our door frame, so start by placing 15 cm marks long the 2 lines your drew on your foamcore sheet.
- STEP 008 > for the door frame top we don't need as tall, so go back to your first line and make a mark with your pencil at 11 cm. The blueprint says 10.75 cm if you want to be accurate, but I wanted to play it safe and be able to trim it precise so I decided to extend a little more to 11 cm. Which ever you select, do this as well at the bottom of your sheet.
- STEP 009 > Connect all your markings using your ruler and pencil.
- STEP 010 > Time for cutting. Remember my tip from the other builds... for the best smooth cuts, try lowering your blade angle as much as you can to the surface of the foamcore as you see on the left side of the photo. Don't angle it super high as you will cut only with the pointy tip of the blade giving you more chances to create rips and holes in the styrofoam sides that is between the 2 foamcore layers of paper.
- STEP 011 > I like to start with the longest cut - the one at the top, so that you don't have a massive sheet to keep spinning during the smaller cuts.
- STEP 012 > After the main slice, start cutting along the remaining guides. Make sure to align your ruler properly before cutting.
-
STEP 013 > For the front and rear walls of your door frame, you will be using the decals as your cutting guides. Cutting these will happen AFTER you glue them onto the foamcore sheets.
For the inside of the door frame, you will be cutting along the bleed. That is the colour line that is between the white of the paper and the actual colour of the door decal.
- STEP 014 > For the outside of the door frames you will use the RED CUTTING GUIDES you may have already seen and used in other builds decal sheets.
- STEP 015 > You want to find a sheet or piece of foamcore that is big enough for the entire door frames decal sheet to completely lay on.
- STEP 016 > Peel your decal. If you don't use FULL SIZE LABEL SHEETS like I do, you would apply gluestick to the back of your print at this step. NEVER EVER USE HOT GLUE TO APPLY DECALS !!!!
- STEP 017 > To make sure such a large surface is applied properly without air bubbles and/or folds, start by folding the paper as you see on the left side of the photo. Lower it until the fold touches the foamcore sheet. then slowly lower one side. Here you see I did the right side first. Place your fingers in the centre where the fold first touched, and move your hand towards the outside. Go back to centre top and do the same, go back centre bottom and do the same until the entire right side has been pressed lightly against the flaomcore sheet.
- STEP 018 > Now go back to the centre and press towards the left, lower your left hand at the same time, letting your right hand fingers slowly put pressure on the paper to make contact and remove air bubbles. Back to the centre, move left towards the bottom, back to centre move left towards the top.
- STEP 019 > At this point your decal sheet should be resting gently on the foamcore. Now that you are sure all the bubbles are not there, move your hand around the sheet as you put more and more pressure. We are ready to start cutting.
- STEP 020 > Start by cutting the top of the frame. Align your ruler with the top horizontal RED CUTTING GUIDELINES and move your X-Acto knife all the way across. Depending on the brand you bought, some foamcore Styrofoam are harder than others, more compact, meaning you may have to to 2-3 extra slices to go all the way through.
