It’s Saturday – the FIRST BIG FULL DAY – The weekend when no school is in effect, when the line up outside to get in is insane and where we had another full line up of our own to get in the booth to build. Word is spreading, and we found today many who have actually returned to Celebration JUST because they knew we were back. Now THAT is pure flattery but also WAY COOL and makes the experience and long hours planning and working the booth during the show well worth it.
.
If you attended and took photos, please email them to me DIORAMAWORKSHOP.COM@GMAIL.COM so I can add them to this gallery.
.
- Day 3 of the convention - 10 am - WELCOME to the DIORAMA WORKSHOP - Entrance sign welcoming the fans to come build and giving instructions on how to get started.
- Flatering to see LONG line ups of people actually excited to come build with us.
- Duke handing out Badges at the reception. Having Badges printed by Lucasfilm was just a really COOL bonus we could offer the fans as they entered.
- As you enter, fans see the week's schedule for the booth activities.
- After 2 days hot STRONG fumes, people started to realise that wearing breathing masks might just be a good thing 😛
- Playing with the Woodburning Pen to add some mountain details and texture. I LOVE this tool.
- Hot Glue station action, attaching the styrofoam pieces before moving to Hot Wire Texturing.
- Woodburning Pens work their magic.
- Mom and Daughter having a good time at the Diorama Workshop !! 🙂
- After you build, make SURE that mom signs your name under your creation. you DON'T want another kid taking your art by mistake on Sunday.
- Building some GIANT Rock formation.
- 11:38 - time for some ILM CREW GIVEAWAYS 🙂 Fred helping me enter visitors numbers into my Mac.
- First prize, OFFICIAL TERMINATOR SALVATION CREW T-SHIRT !!! 0 7 7 4 !!!
- One of the advantages to working at ILM and Lucasfilm, is to have access to SWAG that is NOT available to the general public like this STAR TREK CREW T-Shirt
- Or this Tansformers ILM CREW T-Shirt. I was able to talk ILM to donate a couple dozen items from the various films they worked on as give aways to the fans.
- And the winner is ... 4 - 4 - 1 - 5 !!!
- We have a WINER !!!! Seing fans, expecially kids win, is just such a great feeling.
- Adding a little blue paint creates some contrast and makes the mountains a little more movie magic like.
- Using a hair curler sponge to paint last minute detail hilites to his very COOL Hoth Style "L" Hallway.
- Kids having fun at the painting station. Not sure mom is too excited having her daughter get her clothes dirty LOL.
- How cool is this ? We didn't even ask Laura to make such a huge piece. It just her imagination.
- Now this is what a HAPPY Face looks like. And just look at this AWEOME Mountain Cave. Who knew Styrofoam could be so amazing to play with 🙂
- You aren't seeing double ;p We actually had the amazing TWINS building for the first time at a Diorama Workshop. But NOT their last, They returned 2 years later at Celebration VI 🙂 If that isn't PROOF that the Workshops are the BEST Booth at the show ;p
- Chewbacca taunting the Probot. Hey Look at me, Over here, Over here !!! 😛
- Fans made these cut out mountain shapes to place along the bottom of the curtain to make it look more like mountains then table tops. Great work for 2 hours help !!!
- Don't EVER CROSS the STREAMS !!!! Oh Wrong movie 🙂 I have NO idea what I was telling John here all these years ago LOL. Had X-Men come out yet ? 🙂
- Now THIS is a BIG Ruler 🙂
- More photos of John's feet - Here we can see Ralph McQuarrie running away before getting stepped on 🙂
- John on his knees placing some figures on the tables. We were lucky to have him, I propably would have the tables collapse standing on them LOL.
- Another fan mountain heading to the Paint Drying tables.
- Staring to place the Rebel Trenches. Just seperate the tables a little and slide it in between. How much easier then that ? 🙂
- A close up of how the design works for the Trenches. The side styrofoams lean perfectly on the table tops to prevent the trenches from falling down to the floor. Simple idea that works perfectly as planned.
- Simon pulling the table gap ever so slightly making sure NOT to go TOO FAR and have the fan made creation crash to the floor.
- Duke and Jamie start placing the figures along the first trenches.
- Simon placing the last row of Trenches into the FIRST table gap.
- Dozens and Dozens of the Turrets and Shield Generators have dried and ready for placing on to the main Diorama Display.
- Placing another mountain to dry on the Drying Tables area.
- More trenches ready to be inserted into Row 2.
- John and a mystery helper (those always come in handy AND most of the time become FULL STAFF the NEXT convention:), Place some Rebel Soldiers along the trenches shooting at the Imperial invasion.
- Jamie "Sillof" Follis and I (that would be Frank Diorio :P) being interviewd about how we chose HOTH as a theme for this years Celebration.
- Some FAMILY GUY Fans in our Builders this weekend 😛
- AT-AT looking at us place some more trenches between the table gaps.
- Hasbro came thorugh BIG TIME by sending us a FULL CASE of just Rebel Soldiers from their plant. We just couldn't believe it when we opened the box.
- Close up of John placing some laser gun tripods along the trenches. Gotta thank Hasbro for giving us a CASE direct from their manufacturing plant. These trenches would never have looked as cool without them.
- Is john asking the AT-AT to please cough 😛 LOL Of course he is not !! He's placing Luke !
- I just love these JOHN the GIANT poses 🙂
- Interior of the main Docking Bay almost done, time to place the wired lights on each side of the X-Wings.
- First row of Lights in place on the left of the X-Wings. Looking great so far.
- Magic behind the curtain 🙂 Placing the end of the second row of trenches. The idea to put them between 2 table gaps is really paying off.
- What do you think ? Not bad for one afternoons work ? 🙂
- I think someone likes it at the workshop 🙂
- It's not just kids who come to build, This young lady was an Architect student who was brave enough to do us a favor and build us a Hoth Rebel Base War Room.
- End of the day, still LOTS of builders painting away...
- Yoda agrees... FUN is building at Workshop YES !!! 🙂
- Creating Hoth mountains and Caves isn't just for the little ones you know 🙂
- Super proud of his girlfriends Mountain artwork. This is what makes the months of planning these workshops super worth it.
- Chris Spice from Sandtroopers.com dropped in for a visit as promised...
- Sandtroopers.Com delivers BIG TIME with a gigantic box FULL of Star Wars Hoth Donations. The kids will be happy when they take these home tomorrow and I am happy because we have MORE toys to display in the Diorama 🙂
- Placing the final Rebel Soldiers in their Trenches.
- Chris is putting on some Details to the HUGE Hanger Front Bay Wall. The sliding doors will be attached to this when complete. Chris asked to become full time Crew after having so much fun with us building during Celebration IV.
- Chris has been building as a fan since 2005 Death Star Workshop and has not missed one diorama builders since. It helps he's now Core Crew 🙂
- John walking around placing some crashed Snow Speeders at the foot of the AT-AT's.
- John positioning some figures inside the AT-AT as Simon and another fan named John in the back place some more figures along the trenches.
- Coming along nicely, the figures are almost all placed, Simon and I tweak the Turrets, as John is once again, SLEEPING on the job 😛 His mom will be happy he has clean feet for the world to see LOL.
- Simon finalizing the Turrets guarding the trenches.
- Looking in from behind the Snow Speeder.
- Waiting in line for the next round of Instant Snow Snowstorm. This product was made for this convention. Kids had a BLAST 🙂
- Another happy face waiting in line to get in and build some Hoth Art. LOVE IT !!
- Catching up with Stephen Hayford. Another GREAT Diorama Artist who actually now has his prints sold at the Celebration Store !!!
- Kids are the BEST helpers. Thank god our Staff brings theirs to the show. What would I do without them !!
- Details Details and more Details 🙂
- Adding some wires as details to the kids made Turrets.
- John #2's daughter helping out by placing some styrofoam mountains here and there between the AT-AT's
- Looking down toward the trenches. Very COOL.
- Time to go from outside Hoth to the inside portion of the diorama... Rebels Echo Base.
- How the heck will we place these landing strip lights without stepping all over the figures ?
- Slowly, gently, pushing in the lightstrips on each side of the X-Wings. Looking good, for now ...
- As I am pushing the lightstrip forward, Marc has to try and guide them to the right as they were not very cooperative with us.
- Mark to the rescue with another stick, See if we can guide these with 2 pilots 🙂
- Working better. One more little push to the Right as I push the lights forwards a little more.
- Now push it a little to the RIGHT...
- Admiring the cool Blast Doors that Chris and the fans made for the entrance to the Main Hangar.
- It's amazing what the fans create in 1 hour when we ask for help with special builds.
- Deciding just what distance to place the Main Bay Doors. Open wide ? or closing?
- Attaching the Bay Doors to the walls using Toothpicks. No glue needed here, can then move the doors open and closed during the show for different photo ops.
- Watch out !!! HUGE Bay Doors coming through...
- You better duck lower Frank !!!
- Aligning the Main Bay Doors with John and Mark.
- This is REALLY COOL !!! Great Job Chris Jones !!!
- Asking if anyone had a camera to see how the main doors looked like when placed in front of the main hangar.
- Bringing back Final elevated main arch.
- You guys better not drop that on the boss head 🙂
- Carefull, carefull !!!
- Lifting the Huge Docking Bay Archway that Chris made, trying to find the best height to allow the perfect photo op angle inside.
- Putting some strips of extra foam to make the top of the mountain just a little thicker.
- So last... How FAR do we want this door to poke out ?
- Bay Doors installed, looking in to the FINAL display of our Hoth Rebel Base. Very COOL. a GREAT participation from over 200 fans.

- OK Guys, are you ready ? this is the BIG moment !!!
- 3-2-1 GO !!!! Snow - snow - snow !!!
- Awesome impressive side view of the trenches, Turrets and Shield Generators. All created from scratch by the fans in just 3 days !!!
- Snow everywhere, but with the size of this table, it's gonna take a LOT MORE 😛
- Getting ready for another round of "Instant Snow" Snowstorm on Hoth.
- Filling our youngest crew member 🙂 Alyssa's cup with some Instant Snow. She calls me Mr Frank 🙂 I LOVE IT !!! 🙂
- Does everyone have their cups of instant snow ??
